Here at Cafe Mosaics, we try our best to make conscious efforts to respect Mother Earth, our animal friends, and to treat your bellies right! Using fresh whole foods and organic tonic herbs sourced from responsible farms near and far, our mission is to add a little joy to your day while healing your body simultaneously. We make most of our food and drinks inhouse with simple selective ingredients and pepper it with love. We like to think the food and drinks here are pretty awesome in every sense of the word. 

Our story //

Started by a local family in the mid 1990s, Cafe Mosaics instantly became a hidden gem; a place where you can listen to loud rock music, adore hip local art gracing the olive green walls, and eat a vegetarian meal all at the same time. It was a rare and forward thinking movement at that time, and attracted a solid following of local and travelling musicians, students, residence, and visitors.

In 2009, the restaurant was passed on to another local family (a strong workhorse of a mother and her three not so young foals). Over the few years, some staple recipes stayed the same, while others such as the Huevos Rancheros and Tofu Scramble were refined. With an itch for creativity, new recipes such as the Burgers, Wings, Laughing Monkey Hot Pot, Mac n’ Cheese started to make its way on the menu and quickly stirred more curiosity and cravings. With an increase demand for plant based diet, the itty bitty little Cafe Mo succumbed to the inevitable – a growth spurt.

So now here we are in our slightly bigger and shinier hole in the wall with a more diversified and earth/health conscious food and drink menu. To some patrons who enjoyed things just as they were, they may see us as being completely different. In truth, however, we have never been more connected to our roots and values. Look more closely at our fancy dancy space and you will see that all materials are either repurposed, kept raw, or affordable. Look more closely at our menu and you will see that the ingredients are simple, but full of flavour and nutrition. Nothing in life is ever stagnant and we are here to constantly grow in the direction that feels good to the heart and fuel the soul. Basics //

WHAT TERRITORY ARE YOU ON? We’d like to acknowledge that we are on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional meeting grounds, gathering place, and travelling route to the Blackfoot, Plains Cree, Tsuu T’ina, Metis and Cree.

WHY NOT ALL PLANT-BASED? This restaurant has always been a place for people of all types of dietary preferences to explore the vegetarian cuisine. We are not here to tell you how to think or who to be; we are here to make good wholesome vegetarian food for family and friends to enjoy. Over the years, we have been playing with more plant-based options with only a few options that contain free-range eggs and cheese. As we let this restaurant take its gradual course and transition slowly, we have created a second restaurant that is 100% plant-based. Check out The Moth Cafe.

WE ARE NOT 100% ORGANIC. We totally support it, encourage it, and accommodate it where we can, but simply put, it is not in our means at this time nor are we convinced that all things consumed must be organic.

CASUAL INFORMAL DINING. As we move forward post COVID-19, our restaurant will become an extension of your home. You will be able to order on your phone before arriving to the restaurant, while at the restaurant, or if you want us to come to you. We’ll be around to say hi and do the necessary things, but you take ownership of your space at Mosaics.

ONLINE RESERVATIONS. To ensure 50% capacity, we will be offering online reservations to secure your spot. You can reserve through our site, instagram, Facebook, and google. Please note we do not take reservations on the day of; just future dates! Maximum party size is 6. Walk-ins are welcome.

NON-GENDERED. Did you know we were one of the first restaurants in Edmonton to refuse gendered washroom signs in our restaurant? Yup.

DIVERSITY WELCOMED. We come in all forms, age, sizes, colours, and gifts. What a beautiful thing that is, don’t you think?

WHATS OUR VIBE? Casual. Informal. Personal. There are no scripts at Mosaics. Our staff are free range, learning, and growing into wonderful human beings. Here, you’ll find a spectrum of personalities, taste in music, interests, and direction in life bounded by a common kind and hardworking thread to create one fine mosaic fabric.

DONATIONS. It goes without saying that Edmonton has a strong undercurrent of every possible non-profit organizations, charities, fundraising event you can think of. Edmontonians have big hearts and the drive to back it up. For those looking for donations, you are welcome to email us but please respect our space as we try to navigate our limited community spending and efforts. In the past, we have lead contest for architectural students to design URB PRK, supported many local musicians, local artists and artisans, Fort Mc Murray during the devastating fire, non-profit organizations, and our own staff in pursuit of their dreams and ventures. We prefer to do this privately and at our own pace.
